Big natureboy shout out to @StirUni in lockdown letting the campus grasslands flourish largely uncut, other than a few verges at entrances. Looks the most beautiful it’s been in the 31 years I’ve been in Stirling. Thread follows
Not only does it look beautiful, but it is saving @StirUni money, reducing carbon emissions & improving biodiversity on campus. By not cutting thistles, hard heads & docks, you’re creating winter feeding for finches & other seed eating birds. Please leave these area over winter!
Also, the campus was alive today with tiny froglets that have emerged onto dry land from Airthrey Loch and are finding excellent shelter in all the long uncut vegetation. This might just be the year of highest survival for young frogs in the history of @StirUni!
So, @StirUni well done on allowing the campus to grow largely unmown this summer. Please consider using lockdown as an opportunity to adopt this approach permanently, ‘ work with ecologists on your staff & locally to develop a grassland management plan. And add up the savings!
And PS the @StirUni campus was also buzzing today with hoverflies, bumblebees, moths and other pollinators enjoying all the native flowers that have been allowed to bloom this year.
