Chutes and ladders is such a weird freaking game. There are two versions at my in-laws house. This “nostalgia” (that’s literally what it’s called) features only white kids. And boys and girls doing their respective gendered good and bad deeds. 1/
Girls are rewarded for caregiving (help the hurt boy, get a present; take care of a sick friend so she likes you). Boys are warned that pulling girls’ hair and cats’ tails will get you in trouble. 2/
Here’s the “new” version. Still weirdly full of the message that the reason to do good things is extrinsic reward and the reason to avoid bad things is punishment.
