This comment. I took a screenshot from some article about a month ago, because it spoke to my never rockier relationship with this country. (Thanks, Ben in Florida)
Maybe none of us are Americans. Not those who have roots and Roots hundreds of years deep. Not those who immigrated and passed citizenship tests more recently. Not those who love it without question. Not those who are so disappointed as to contemplate leaving.
Maybe we should ALL see ourselves as immigrants every day our our lives, with the same imperative to learn and keep learning--and unlearning too--in the hopes that someday, if we work hard enough, we can become Americans.
For all my disappointment in it, I've seen a few glimmers of what I thought this country was over the past six or so weeks. We are in a moment where we can make a real change if we keep the momentum going.
Today is a good day to register to vote or to check your registration status. (And also a good day to arrest the cops who killed #BreonnaTaylor, #ElijahMcClain , and so many others). Then be sure to #VOTE.
Don't forget: "a Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people." Happy #IndependenceDay.
