Alright everyone. This is a thread on my favourite album of all time. The alpha WuTang solo album, the incomparable Liquid Swords. THE most skilled rapper in the Wu, this is nothing short of GZA's magnum opus. GZA and RZA have incredible chemistry.Thread might be long lol THREAD:
This is the spiritual successor to 36 chambers imo. The kung fu samples, chess references are all taken to the extreme perhaps due to GZA being 'The spiritual head' of the Wu. GZA and RZA have incredible chemistry and they were both set on the same target with this album.
The album is like Cuban Linx in that their is an overarching story from track to track, helped to be visualised by Kung Fu samples, mainly from Shogun Assassin. As soon as you listen to the haunting you hear a young boy narrate the story of his Samurai father, who was feared by..
the Shogun. Several assassins were sent to kill this Samurai, buy failed. Similar samples are laced throughout the album and by the end of GZA's portion on I Gotcha Back, The Master of Death has his throat slit. The assassin's imo represent the entirety of the Wu and GZA is a...
Lone assassin who throughout the album journeys to hone his skills as a swordsman (knowledge) before killing his target, metaphorically acquiring infinite fluid knowledge, hence the title of the album. By the end, GZA has displayed his skills as a lyricist/swordsman. Putting on
one of the finest displays of lyricism you could ask for. Song wise, it is very diverse in subject matter. The title track is typical Wu tang braggadocio, but as GZA travels from Duel of the Iron Mic onwards and especially Living In The World Today, his lyricism becomes more
layered as does the subject matter of the songs. Gold highlights the need for the absolute need for economic wealth in society, Cold World has Deck (kills every verse on the album btw) and GZA trade harrowing street tales over a haunting beat.
Labels,as its name suggests is an attack on labels and a want for artist expression with some of the best wordplay I have ever heard. Ironically, most of the labels GZA mentions no longer exist which gives the song even more weight imo.
4th Chamber has the Goat, Killah Priest and RZA feature to trade philosophical verses. Ghostface asks questions, Priest raps like he does on BIBLE, RZA warns of a virus and the government and GZA is low key, he has mouths to feed, unnecessary beef is more cows to breed.
Swordsman and Living In The World Today all have GZA portray the dark streets of Brooklyn to perfection.
Shadowboxin featuring Method Man (who feature as an Allie/back up throughout the album), has he and GZA both bring their signature Wu Tang braggadocio Noticeably with more depth than on the opener, highlighting the growth of GZA (and to a lesser degree Meth) throughout the album.
I Gotcha Back deals with fake people and the hook stresses the message of the song , it is the people you least expect to be your enemies. This song transitioned from Swordman really reflects how dark the second half of the album really is.
Once GZA has acquired knowledge after I Gotcha Back, Killah Priest makes a career defining appearance on the solo track BIBLE, the light at the end of the tunnel on this masterpiece. He stresses religious themes which had already been mentioned on the album over a beautiful beat
Feature wise as I already mentioned, this is the most 'Wu Tang' Wu Tang ever got. Deck brings incredible storytelling when he shows up, Masta Killa kills his verse on DOTIM. Meth first verse on Shadowboxin is legendary. RZA on 4th chamber is one of the best verses oat.
But the best overall feature artist is clearly Killah Priest. BIBLE is considered the best song by some and his verse on 4th Chamber is amazing. He mentions the origin of man, stressing the religious aspect of the album.
Anyways every song on here except Wind Staff is a 10 imo, which is a 9. RZA's production is close to flawless, GZA's lyricism is incredible. This is the goat imo. An absolute masterpiece. Sorry for the long ass thread btw lol. I hope I have convinced some to relisten.
Forgot to add this image as well. Why I definitely think their is a narrative going on.
