I have been beating the "asymmetrical polarization" drum for over 15 years & it's starting to seem like the broader public is going to catch on about 5 minutes before the fascists completely take over and render the point moot.

What's always struck me is the extent to which many people *begin* with the premise that the 2 sides in America's political conflict are mirror images. It's a fixed presumption; evidence-gathering & arguments are reverse engineered to support it.

Part of the great attraction, I think, is that both-sides analysis, in all its many forms, necessarily implies that the analyst is smarter & more perceptive than those silly partisans who choose a side. "I see things from a higher plane; I'm not caught up in your silly passions."
