here's a brief summary on nubia and the nubians (a thread) :
#nubianheritagemonth
the word nubia, comes from an ancient Egyptian word (nub/nwb) that means gold
Nubians are descendants of an ancient African civilization as old as Egypt itself, which once presided over an empire and even ruled Egypt. Their historical homeland, often referred to as Nubia, stretches along the Nile covering present-day southern Egypt and northern Sudan
"Nubians are black people. There are some of the blackest Africans among the Nubians of Egypt and Sudan. There is one meaning of black but there are variations of black people. "
according to the system of linguistic classification (which is increasingly less used by modern historians) the modern Nubian language is classified to be within the Afro-Asiatic languages of North Africa
Nubia is described as a region rich in gold, bdellium and onyx in Genesis 2:11. This marks the southwestern boundary of Eden, a vast well-watered region that was bounded on the northeast by the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. The red area is the likely extent of Biblical Eden
kings of nubia conquered egypt for about a century (25th dynasty was even named after them)
their alphabetic writing system was developed around 200 BCE (this period was called Meriotic period and such writing is called Meriotic writing)
the land between the first and second cataract is known as lower nubia (wawat in ancient Egypt) and further south between the second and sixth cataract is upper nubia (kush)
nubia was known as ta-sety (land of the bowmen) after the weapon that the nubians were famous for using
nubians are also known for ; great bead work, embroidery, jewelery and the finest pottery work, they built temples and pyramids much more than egyptians, some of them were even older but sadly they were destroyed by either, egyptians (for the dams)/colonizers looking for gold
egyptians were envious of the nubian strength and wealth and had several wars. full invasion happened by Ahmose. Amenhotep I conquered Karmah and destroyed kingdom of kush, egyptians also exploited and stole a lot of nubian sources, mainly gold
The eventual influx of Arabs and Nubians to Egypt and Sudan had contributed to the suppression of the Nubian identity following the collapse of the last Nubian kingdom around 1504. A major part of the modern Nubian population became totally Arabized, and some claimed to be Arabs
Nubia was divided between Egypt and Sudan. During the early-1970s,by British colonizers, many Egyptian Nubians were forcibly resettled many times to make room for Lake Nasser after the construction of the dams at Aswan and for other constructions that sadly ruined its lands
the “Great Displacement” in 1964, evacuated 44 villages of their residents to build the Aswan High Dam, the brainchild of Gamal Abdel Nasser that was also recorded as one of the worst and inhumane humanitarian cases in history
"Those with longer memories say Nubians have been mistreated since the first damming of the Nile at Aswan in 1902, which reduced the amount of land Nubians were able to cultivate, forcing many of them to migrate north"
For half a century, Egypt’s Nubians have patiently lobbied the government in Cairo for a return to their homelands on the banks of the upper Nile, desperate to reclaim territory their ancestors first cultivated 3,000 years ago
nubians have been mistreated for ages, viewed as second class citizens, forcing them to work as doormen and servants in modern day Egypt, Nubians deal with tremendous amounts of racism on daily basis, yet people still dismiss their struggles and try to silence them
"we gave a lot to the country an. An entire community lost its home, traditions, way of life and even the graves of our ancestors, and we did it willingly without a fight", yet the gov is trying to annihilate our history and push it under the rug, bas not today, not on my watch.
