hi.
lets talk about commissioning autistic artists:
lets talk about commissioning autistic artists:
1)i'm not going to speak for everyone, only for myself and my experiences as an autistic artist doing commission work as a full time job. with that said i would appreciate feedback from other autistic artists as well. tell your stories in the replies, offer information, etc.
2) i'm speaking from the heart so a lot of what i'm saying might be a little jumbled and i can try to explain things to the best of my ability if there's any questions i feel i could appropriately help with once i get my thoughts organized and i'm in the right place to do so.
3) this is NOT about a particular individual but a collection of recent situations that have unfortunately put me off, that of which i can explain why later in this thread.
this is NOT a personal issue between myself or a client. please respect the boundaries of myself and others

4) when working with an artist on the spectrum you must understand that we work and communicate differently than nt creators. i thrive on affirmative feedback, A LOT of feedback. if there is something you do not like about the progress i've made on my work for you, TELL ME.
you aren't being picky, you aren't being mean, i am here to provide you a service. cooperation and communication is KEY for me. alternatively to this, as an autistic person i struggle reading tone. short, blunt messages such as "cool", "looks good", "alright" are terrifying -
to me. its disheartening to see such(what appears to be) little excitement for the work i'm giving you. it makes me feel subpar, and inadequate to provide the content you paid me for.
i'm not sure how to articulate this feeling into words. it just feels really, really bad.

i catch myself hours later after the fact doubting my worth as an artist. this might not seem that important to you, but it is to us. feedback is reassurance. being upfront with us is the most important thing. like i said before, i struggle to understand tones and cues -
in short and blunt messages.
just please consider these small things while working with an autistic artist. we're very intelligent, talented and dedicated people. we are passionate about what we do.
please share that passion and dedication with us.

thank you all for the positive feedback, it feels nice feeling like i can be real like this in a time when i don't feel like i can be.
