FromSoft games are deeply linked to queer identities and yes I have the academic knowledge and proof to back this claim.
The gothic mode - which is one of Miyazakiâs main influences - was literally the only way for queer identities to be examined, queer authors, wether openly like Oscar Wilde, or covertly like other male writers, express their grief about their âothernessâ in especially the
extremely homophobic Victorian society through monsters. They become the monster than needs to be killed, a part of them had to die so they wonât be shunned by the society they live in. The gothic mode is always problematising themes of transgression and homosexuality and
trans gender identities are transgressions of cis straight identities that were desired. The thing is - you shouldnât read it the texts as condemning the queer characters, rather, they are victims. They try to hide themselves, kill a part of their identity in order to survive
everyday but you cannot repress who you truely are and thus the monster is created, the part of your own identity you tried to surpress only to violently claw its way to the surface.
Saying that reading FromSoft games as analogies for queer identities is far fetched literally missed the whole point. Without queer writers you wouldnât have these games today, because their works and expression of grief inspired Miyazaki so heavily.
