For all its messiness, the US has in many ways been a “beacon of hope” to the world since its founding. Born from democratic self-determination, and with the statue of liberty’s “give me your tired, your poor...” seen by waves of immigrants desperate to seek a better life.
2/ The US has also been a beacon for the powers of economic freedom to raise quality of life. The Soviets were shocked at a basic US supermarket - that most people in America have access to a variety of food without rationing or endless lines.
3/ today we’re concerned about income inequality, but a century ago the idea that a recent immigrant could become a billionaire by creating a new company that customers love was hard to imagine, and has inspired many.
4/ the turmoil in the US now is deserved. We have historic and current problems to address as a nation. But, we’re a free nation that can openly debate. Where “censorship” refers to being shadowbanned on twitter, not sent to a gulag or reeducation camp.
