What I don't entirely understand about the "it's too soon to end lockdown" argument is when it won't be too soon. No vaccine on the horizon. No end in sight. We can't stay locked down forever. So - what *should* we be doing?
(Personally I think the travesty is that the government has had four months and has failed to get even close to something resembling test and trace, but that's just me.)
Anyway, I'm not denying that the government has been bloody useless because *gestures broadly to the government* - I just sometimes get a sense that there are some unrealistic expectations, about the longevity of lockdown or the chances of eliminating the virus, out there.
Someone in my mentions arguing we could have eliminated the virus like NZ did and I'm... just not sure that's true. There are twice as many people in London as there are in New Zealand, 13 times more in the whole UK, we're far more connected to the wider world...
It isn't just about competence. Locking down a small, distant country is easier than doing the same to a large, much more networked one.
Well, that's half an hour of Not Getting Any Work Done I'm never getting back, wonder what's on the other side
The fact half the people replying to this think it's completely fair, and the other half think I'm a fucking monster, says something about the mess we're in I think
