Today marks 10 years since the passing of grand Ayatollah Marjaa Sayyed Mohammad Hussein Fadlallah (r), a man who devoted his entire life for serving Islam, the people, and the righteous causes of the resistance and fighting oppression.

Sayyed Fadlallah comes from the lineage of Imam Hassan ibn Ali ibn Abi Taleb (as). He was born on the 19th of Shaaban, 1354 H (16th of November, 1935) in the holy city of Najaf, Iraq.
His father is the Muslim cleric, Sayyed Abdurrauf Fadlallah (r), who was an esteemed scholar in the city of Najaf and one of the prominent scholars of Jabal 'Amel, specifically the city of Bint Jbeil in South Lebanon.

Sayyed Mohammad Hussein Fadlallah left school at the age of 9 after completing the 4th grade to begin his Hawza studies under his first teacher, his father.
Among his other teachers were some of the most prominent names of Najaf: Sayyed Abul Qassem al-Khoei (r), Sayyed Mohsen al-Hakeem (r), who was his mother's uncle, as well as his uncle, Sayyed Mohammad Saeed Fadlullah, who had a great impact on him.

He was known in school for his sharpness, where he began studying the book "Qatr Annada" at the age of 11, despite the difficulty of its language & terms.
He also collaborated with martyr Sayyed Mohammad Mahdi al-Hakeem (r) on a magazine called "Al-Adab" (literature) at that age.
Alongside Islam, he expressed a great interest in political & societal issues. Some of the scholars who had a great influence on him in this sense were martyr Sayyed Mohammad Baqer Sadr (r) & Imam Khomeini (r). He played a significant role in Iraqi & Lebanese political issues.
He left Najaf in 1966 after spending 3 decades there learning and teaching in the Hawza of Najaf, as well as being part of major educational, political, and intellectual movements there. He moved to Lebanon due to the dire need of an educated scholar to guide the Lebanese public.
On leaving Najaf for Lebanon, martyr Sayyed Mohammad Baqer Sadr (r), who was Sayyed Fadlallah's close friend and colleague, said, "Every scholar who leaves Najaf loses it, except Fadlallah; Najaf has lost him."
Upon moving to Lebanon, he immediately began his Islamic and political activism. He was able to transmit his passion and energy to the Lebanese youth who attended his lectures. He emphasized on the importance of fighting and resisting israeli aggression.
He went to the extent of weekly travelling to South Lebanon from Beirut to meet with a group of young men to discuss religious matters with them and was able to leave a great influence on them.

Sayyed Fadlallah was one of the most prominent faces of the Resistance in Lebanon alongside several scholars, such as Imam Musa Sadr (r). He was one of the first to propose the concept of armed resistance against israeli occupation.

He proposed a great threat to Zionist-American goals in the region since his ideas created ground for the foundation of organized Resistance groups, most notably, Hezbollah, & was thus titled: the spiritual father of the Resistance.

Sayyed Fadlallah always expressed his support for the Islamic Revolution in Iran, promoted it in Lebanon, and occasionally met with its leaders.
His role and support of the Resistance in Lebanon continued until his last days.

He spoke about Imam Khomeini's role often and always stressed on the importance of continuing the path the Imam paved, saying, "If Imam Khomeini was one [man] during his life, then we are all Khomeinists after his passing."
Sayyed Fadlullah established one of the largest charity organizations of the region, Al-Mabarrat Association, which is composed of schools, institutes, mosques, hospitals, orphanages, & more. This organization still aids thousands of families to this day in Lebanon and abroad.
Sayyed Mohammad Hussein Fadlallah (r) was very close to the people and was titled "father of the orphans."

In his last words, Sayyed Fadlallah advised Muslims to stick to the path of Islam and attend to mosques. He added, "I will not rest until israel is eradicated." He also emphasized on several verses of the Quran that Muslims should abide by.
A massive funeral was held in Dahyeh, Beirut, attended by several religious and political figures and representatives from Lebanon and the region. His resting place is in one of the halls of the al-Hasanayn (as) mosque in Haret Hreik, Beirut.
