We have to disrupt the romanticization of armed resistance when we see it. Militarization should not precede community infrastructure, especially not in a country where gun literacy is not nearly as prevalent as gun violence.

Your greatest “weapon” will always be your community and your spatial awareness. A gun will be of little use if you do not know your neighbors’ names and the geography of your city. One soldier with a gun is nothing compared to an army. Your community members are your comrades.

Giving a gun to every resident of Flint, Michigan will not counteract the effects of biological warfare.

War doesn’t look how you think it does and neither does revolution. It’s time to reframe.

Also, this is not to minimize the significance of armed resistance and its role in the Black Radical Tradition. This is to say that there are various, underutilized revolutionary practices that are far safer and more rooted in sustained, collective care than gun ownership.

EYE personally feel that the mass appeal of firearms in a revolutionary context is less about safety and more just a symptom of phallogocentrism and the misogynist representation of guns as tools for establishing individualism and exerting dominance.

As the child of a formerly incarcerated person and a disabled person, I’m also considering who can legally own guns and who is physically/mentally fit to operate guns. I’m also considering the power imbalances and potential harm that widespread gun use inevitably carries.

I’ll end by saying this: Cis-men at the helm of movement spaces consistently demonstrate their inability to respect the lives and bodily autonomy of the women in their communities. I am not confident that these same men will not play out their new age Black Panther 1/2

2/2 fantasies on unassuming women - particularly Black trans women- and embolden the culture of brutality and misogyny that characterized Black and communist organizations in past decades.
