The first real Black Superheroine in #Comics was not Storm or Bumblebee. They were preceded by several years by Butterfly. Not perfect in the writing as it was not created by African Americans, but neither was Storm or Black Panther. They tried their best. #Comics THREAD
Created by three Jewish Americans and one Italian American, Gary Friedrich, pencils by Ross Andru, inks by Jack Abel and Mike Esposito. Butterfly debuted as a back-up feature in the Skywald b/w comic magazine Hell-Rider #1, August, 1971.
This publishing company was also founded by Jews, Marvel's Sol Brodsky and also Israel Waldman. They knew how vital is was to have Black superheroes appearing in American comics. Jews have taken part in the history of making sure Black people are represented in American comics.
Sometimes they failed in the execution, sometimes miserably, but the effort was there. Lee Falk, i.e. Leon Harrison Gross, a Jewish man in 1934 in his Mandrake The Magician comic added the character of Lothar. Also not perfect but important and given a decent role in the comic.
In 1956 William Gaines, A Jewish man, publisher of EC Comics threatened to sue the Comics Code Authority Administrator because they refused to allow him to publish "Judgment Day", in Incredible Science Fiction #33, a story allegory for civil and human rights, (cont.)
because the lead character was Black. This story was written by Jewish American Albert Bernard Feldstein.
In 1975 Len Wein, a Jewish American, with Dave Cockrum created the fantabulous Storm! And of course another Jewish American, Chris Claremont continued her adventures! #Marvel #Comics #Storm #Xmen
In 1970, Jewish American Robert Kanigher, along with Nick Cardy created the DC Comics character Mal Duncun now known as Vox, previously known as Hornblower, Guardian and Herald. His 2nd persona, Hornblower, was because he had Gabriel's Horn which was a Jewish Shofar. #DCComics
In 1975, Bob Roziaks and Jewish American artist Irving Novick created the next Black heroine after Storm.....Bumblebee!!!! She was Mal's girlfriend. #Bumblebee #Comics #DCComics
Of COURSE we have to go to the GOAT, Black Panther, created by Jewish American Stanley Lieber and Jacob Kurtzberg,i.e. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby! #BlackPanther #Avengers #FantasticFour
Is Robert Stern Jewish? I have no clue. Maybe, lol. I might have to delete this one, lol. In 1982 Robert Stern, and artist John Romita Jr created Monica Rambeau!!! #MonicaRambeau #CaptainMarvel
In 1981 writer Gerry Conway and Jewish American artist Bob Oksner created the DC Comics character, Vixen! #Vixen #DCCOMICS #Superman
In 1993 a very special thing happened. DC Comics went into business with the newly formed Milestone Media. This amazing group of African American comics creators changed the game, especially for Black Representation in comics. #Milestone #MilestoneComics
The woman that oversaw that union and launched Milestone into DC comics, was Jewish American DC Comics Editor In Chief Jenette Kahn, daughter of a Rabbi. #Jewish
It was an industry pretty much founded by Jews & it's nice to see that some did the right thing. It continues with dan Slott, the Kuberts and so many more. Here's another, Bendis, he created Miles Morales & Riri Williams & Naomi over at DC
I should not that Bendis did not create the characters solely on his own but with artist collaboration and other writers.
