Chausath Yogini Temple, near the famous Marble Rocks in Jabalpur, houses idols of 64 attendants of Goddess Durga, having the idol of Lord Shiva at the centre, surrounded by these idols.

Originally, there would have been a shrine, right at the centre of this structure, with an image of Bhairava. Today, in the sanctum stands an exquisite image of Uma-Maheshwara, seated together in an embrace.

Very interestingly, there are 81 niches holding images of the Yoginis here. Therefore, technically, this isn’t a Chausath (64) Yogini temple, but an 81-Yogini Temple.

Built around 1000 AD by the Kalachuri dynasty, this temple was subjected to destruction by the Mughal invaders. Due of the fact that the idols being immaculately carved, the marvellous iconography of remains can be seen.
