Saroj Khan was a LEGEND. Hindi cinema had a history of song-dance tradition. But it was her vision and talent that led to the introduction of a category for best choreography at Filmfare. The song was the iconic Ek Do Teen. #SarojKhan
Imagine you have had Sohanlal, Lachhu Maharaj, Herman Benjamin, B Harilal, PL Raj and so many other luminaries. In walks a thirtysomething Saroj Khan and ensures that choreographers are recognised for their work.
In my only meeting with her, at her studio in Oshiwara, she said that one of her favourite choreographies was PL Raj's "Khaike Paan Benaraswala". Would go to cinema just to catch the song. Was thrilled that Farhan Akhtar asked her to choreograph it for his take on Don.
I have grown up practising the steps she made for Sridevi and Madhuri. One of my personal favourite works of hers was that lyrical walk in "Na Jaane Kahaan Se Aayi Hai".
When Mani Ratnam and her got together you'd get magic like this. That sequence under the tree. You won't find a better song about the joy of dancing in the rain
She was da queen of bringing out the sensuality. Yes there were jhatkas but there was also ada. Case in point: Humko Aaj Kal.
RIP Saroj Khan. She'd make you feel the music.
he thread is incomplete without acknowledging a Sridevi-Saroj classic. What a jodi. About Sridevi she'd said that her face dances. And Saroj Khan ensured that she highlighted it. Morni Baga Ma is just beautiful
