A thread on #JioMeet

As we all know, JioMeet is launched and I was excited to use this app get a feel of its features. From the look and feel of it, it looked like a replication of @zoom_us app. Except slightly differeces in the UI, feature wise it looks the same

As the look and feel is almost similar to zoom, I thought may the experience would be slightly different. But if you try and use JioMeet, the experience is moreover similar to zoom. So, I thought can an app copy another app and not have any legal issues!!

There is a concept of white labelling of products. If you use API or SDK of an app to build your app for your firm, your meetings will have a the parent app logo/watermark(saying “powered by xyz”). This helps those firms who have the financial muscle to use an existing app.

If you want to remove the the logo/watermark and/or add your own logo, you need to discuss business and licensing with the parent app team AKA white-labelling. You can use the APIs and SDK’s to build your own web application and embed the parent app core into your app.

You can also use your own domain (such as http://your-business-name.com ) for your white labelled app, and the parent/original product company can then help to build out a complete private cloud infrastructure for you, which is an expensive option.

In short, if your firm have the financial muscle, you can white label any product and give it your name and use it in market!! We will never know the details and these are private business deals and won’t be public.

It takes years to build a video conferencing app and also it needs extensive testing to tune its performance. If you are coping an app as it is then there may be legal issues unless, you have white-labelled your app.

JioMeet is great for India. But looking into the app, it feels as if it has the core of zoom app. Which is absolutely fine if both parties are ok with it.
