Day 0 of quarantine & the excitement is nonstop! My hotel delivered fresh milk tea. I received a call from Taiwan CDC thanking me for my patriotic service. I struck up a convo w/the boy quarantined in the room directly across the street from mine. Maybe he will become my friend.
Pls check back Day 14 when I've paced 200k steps across my 10 坪 room & eaten 2x my weight in bentos. Drop recommendations for activities below. So far @gracejackson is in 1st place w/: There must be a plucky entrepreneur who will deliver a case of ice-cold 十八天 to your hotel??
I was really struck by how the CDC rep took the initiative to say that he knows quarantine is hard but that this is how we protect the country. And that the 2x/daily calls are not just to monitor my compliance but also to make sure I know the government cares about my welfare.
Day 5 - Slight dilemma. Now have four bags of snacks and instant noodles to consume (three from my aunt, one from the local district office 區公所)

but am barely keeping up with the breakfast sandwiches and two giant bentos
delivered by the hotel each day

Day 8 - Who does a quarantine bubble better, #Taiwan or the @NBA? From top L counterclockwise: hotel bento from 大叔食事; brownies sent by a friend from 法國的秘密甜點 + local beer & face masks from @tientienkaixin
vs @Chiozza11’s grey wheat pasta & @troydaniels’ sad pita chips

Day 10 - It took me a while to understand the different levels of gov't & civil society I'm reporting to during quarantine in #Taiwan. From top L, symptom monitoring on a form that will be countersigned by a CDC official; daily text messages from the Central Epidemic Command Ctr
Day 10, cont'd - 2x daily calls by the District Office 大同區公所 who do not rest even on weekends (my minder said I'm his responsibility
); 2x daily temperature reports to my hotel staff, who send me stickers of encouragement. It's a mix of automation & intensive human labor.

Day 13! I spoke with @CNBC reporter @chrissyfarr about the care & consideration I’ve received during my quarantine in #Taiwan. As @soonw123 says, it’s a whole-of-society response. Read on for insights by ace journalists @CatherineShu & @erinhale as well. https://twitter.com/chrissyfarr/status/1283436141497081856?s=20
Day 14 - How do I explain #Taiwan? Taiwan is the type of country where the diligent hotel staff cheers on your good health & thanks *you* for successfully completing quarantine. "Congrats! Tomorrow is check-out. With your dinner you'll find an extra drink as a mark of our regard"
Day 16: The authorities ask us to wear masks & avoid crowded indoor spaces for 1 wk after quarantine. So instead of taking transit I biked to the port of Keelung to see the ocean. Taiwan is a stupidly beautiful country, 1 whose people have fought so hard to be free in this moment
Day 18 - Small kindnesses abound everywhere in Taiwan. Today I went to buy a plant
to say thanks to my pandemic hero, my district office minder who called me daily to ask about my health & gave me little pep talks. The florist insisted on giving me 2 extra plants at no charge.

Day 21 - Today I received my last text from the Central Epidemic Command Center. On Sunday I get to take my grandmother to dinner in Taipei. Thank you to the staff at @tecochicago, @EVAAirUS, @taoyuanairport, @Taiwan_CDC & more for this irreplaceable time with family & friends

Day 21 - In April I wrote an essay about longing for #Taiwan from the pandemic-plagued rural US. Today on my longest trip here since I was a child, I’m having trouble concentrating on anything except the feeling of having made it through to the other side. https://inkstickmedia.com/island-utopia/
