I just...sometimes, I wonder if people in my community realize how much we owe to people with intellectual disabilities.

That’s a lie. We don’t, so often, we don’t realize it. Because if we did, we’d be a lot more thoughtful-a lot more respectful. I’d hope so, anyway.
We owe our right to live in the community to a Black woman with an intellectual disability. I think about that a lot.

I think a lot about how people treat black people with intellectual disabilities, in our communities. How we treat each other, when we think someone has an ID.
I shouldn’t leave that unsaid. Badly, is how we treat people we think have an ID. We act shamefully towards them. And why? What scares you about these members of our community-YOUR PEOPLE-so much?

Why do you think they have to be the outsiders, in a community full of them?
Call me what you want, but I’m not going to be silent. We don’t treat people we think have IDs well.

We accuse people we don’t like of having an ID.
We imply people with IDs can’t have leadership positions.
We imply they can’t have full lives, be trusted to have kids or family.
I’m sick of watching this play out over and over again online, and maybe one person offering a lukewarm “stop it, that’s kinda ableist”

I’m tired of not seeing everyone stepping up to the plate and going to bat for these people-OUR folks-when they’re targeted by eugenic policies
The I/DD community is just that-a community. And we need to fucking act like it. We rely on each other, and we have history together.

Know that history. Own it. And fight for what both of our communities deserve.

Full humanity, no exceptions-for anyone.
