These are the types of narratives I’m speaking about.
Messi has adapted to different styles of plays under different managers & carried the club on his back, but people expect sidemen who join the club to become the main men & for Leo to adapt, rather than the other way around. https://twitter.com/wrighty_8/status/1278675153946361862
Like in 14/15, Messi gave up his preferred central position to accommodate Suarez, and as a result, Suarez is 40 goals off becoming the second highest goalscorer in the club’s history.
He also adapted to Neymar and took him under his wing and always spoonfed him golden chances.
We can look at numerous cases over the years where he was able to help players like Cristian Tello score a hat trick, and giving up hat tricks/pokers in order to gift a PK to a teammate who was struggling for confidence in front of goal.
We can look at 16/17, where against PSG, Messi handed over the keys to Neymar, who was really feeling himself in those last 20 minutes, because he knew that it would give the team the win we so desperately needed.
THAT is adaptability and putting the team ahead of yourself.
Now, that we’ve been signing players who don’t even fit the profile of players we need, the blame is falling at the feet of Messi because he’s not able to bail them out.
Players who come to Barça MUST adapt to the system.
The system will NOT adapt to you.
