We reference Thanksgiving a few times in this pod. And with everything going on with the name change controversy, I wanted to take a second to speak on it and how it changed my outlook on it.. https://twitter.com/fiftygutblog/status/1278841409383149569
Thanksgiving Day 2017. We pull up to the FedEx parking lot for Redskins v. Giants. @YoungHeff_21, @AnTCLiFFaa & I get there, we do our usual tailgate thing. First thing I always do is put up the flagpole, DC flag on top, Redskins flag on bottom.
As soon as the flag goes up, a group of about dozen folks approach us. They’re reps from a Navajo publication. This is the first and only time I’ve ever talked to a Native American about the team name.
Conversation was civil, we both shared thoughts. I told them I have been a
Conversation was civil, we both shared thoughts. I told them I have been a
fan of the team my entire life, I personally didn’t think it was made to be offensive and it would be hard to see the name change and he understood my stance. I even asked the about the polls a lot of publications ran over the years and what their thoughts were on them. What I
took away from the discussion was not the group trying to shame me because honestly they weren’t. It was the thought that they felt that I, and many in the fan base, prioritize our own feelings about the TEAM over the feelings of PEOPLE that are actually effected by the nickname.
I can’t look at a group of people that are offended and respond with, “well the Washington Post says you shouldn’t be.” Who am I to tell anyone what they should or shouldn’t find offensive.

In the years since that night, I’ve talked a lot about it. Growing up as a black man in
a mostly white area, I have felt what it’s like to feel marginalized and that my voice didn’t matter. In this moment, I understood that these folks felt the same way. That hit home for me and it has ever since.
All that being said, I don’t care what happens. I love the team and
All that being said, I don’t care what happens. I love the team and
I always will no matter what the name is. I was a hard-line pro name to indifference about it. There are polls that say most Native Americans don’t care and there are polls that contradict that. But I know that I can’t disregard the minority of any poll because the majority
doesn’t speak for an entire group of people when it comes to a matter like this. I don’t speak for other black men and women and they don’t speak for me. You don’t speak for everyone in your race and vice versa. A poll doesn’t matter when there are voices in that group that
still find it deeply offensive. That is a sticking point that I have to respect no matter what my feelings on the team.
