hi! the idea that we shouldn't film theatrical productions because it doesn't translate/will kill the art of theatre is demonstrably bullshit
1. filmed productions that are regularly made available to international audiences (NTlive, The Globe, Stratford festival etc. prove that they're very translatable if filmed *well*)
2. imo if you film one performance and make that available to the public for free or a very small fee, congratulations, you now have double the audience.
2 (cont.) the person who chooses to watch via film for whatever reason is now leaving a space for someone who *can* afford a ticket to buy one. (ideally this would provide greater motivation for companies to lower ticket prices for locals, but who the fuck knows)
2 (cont.) now you have the financial support of the people who can afford to get their butt in the seat, and the cultural (?) support from the ppl who would like to, but cant (who might be able to financially support you in the future, now that they know and admire yr work)
support that is not financial is still huge. you're instilling a love and appreciation of theatre to a wider audience. that's what keeps theatre alive, not $$$.
