When I say that my neighbors aren’t just the point of my job but that they are the only way I can do my job, it’s not a pretty sentence (well, it kinda is) but rather it’s a truth. I work for my neighbors as a cop because they consent to let me work with them as a cop...
So that means I follow laws and regulations that I ask neighbors to do as well. That means I must be transparent in all matters. If I can’t explain what I’m doing in one clear sentence, I shouldn’t be doing it. And ‘cuz I said so’ is never that sentence...
People always point out ‘but what about the murderer or the person who fights? And on & on & on. And the answer is ‘that’s the easy stuff’. The tough stuff is not seeing your neighbors through the lens of the worst among us. They’re not the point of the job. Everyone else is.
Worked some cases today, one on a very anti-nice issue. I have great colleagues. My favorite part of the day was when a colleague & I get called to interview a young neighbor about a felony & we work quickly to protect him FROM the power of the state. We worked to clear him & did
Some will dismiss the idea of working for people instead of against people as naive or a sign I don’t work hard crime. I’ve neither the patience nor the desire to correct that belief but I’ll keep it in mind as I work towards Homicide, my goal as a detective. And giggle.
