Moving away from group tables and going back to single student desks is going to be tough. Some schools, like mine, don’t even have enough desks to do this. And we know that group seating is a best practice for learning. So...yeah...it’s gonna be an experience. https://twitter.com/dylanpmccoy/status/1278808961223995393
I work in Hamilton County. That article applies to Marion County, which is our southern neighbor so I wouldn’t be surprised if we follow similar guidelines. My school has around 910 students; we don’t have 910 desks and don’t have enough room in classrooms for that many desks.
I am all about safety and willing to work with the guidelines from the health department. But I want somebody to explain to me how we will accommodate some of these guidelines, given our current physical space and environment?
Covid-19 has highlighted every major and minor problem that schools have been facing for decades. Physical space is one of those problems. Too many schools are packed, classroom sizes too large, and so on.
And educators have been pointing at these problems for decades and are frequently ignored by lawmakers that could have acted on our behalf.
I know that educators are going to do the best we can with whatever we are given. But if what we are given is insufficient, please remember that we don’t get a lot of say in what we are given. Lawmakers have the control when it comes to a lot of that.
