Re: Washington football: Investor pressure led to this moment https://www.adweek.com/brand-marketing/investors-ask-nike-fedex-and-pepsico-to-end-relationships-with-the-washington-redskins/
P. S. Fred Smith, CEO of FedEx, is part of Dan Snyder's ownership group
Important to remember that Dan Snyder clinging to Washington's name these past few years has largely been out of stubbornness and defiance. In 2014, the US Patent and Trademark Office canceled six of the team's federal trademark protections https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2014-06-18/redskins-can-lose-name-or-lose-money
In fact, also as 2014, you could see Snyder positioning his team's name to be the center of a culture war. Here's a column I wrote on the lobbyists and politicians involved https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2014-06-10/political-animals-and-the-fight-over-redskins
But, perhaps the most cynical interpretation is that Snyder had attempted to leverage the fight over the team's name to force local politicians to give him money to build a new stadium in downtown DC https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2014-09-03/redskins-may-trade-racism-for-a-new-stadium
Anyway, this has been a LONG time coming, but it's not just an issue of racism. It's an issue of racism being used to stoke civic division for financial and political gain
