When talking about “the world” we should define what we mean. It’s NOT members of the Church versus everyone else.
“The world” is a set of beliefs contrary to Jesus’ teachings (value = looks, possessions, intelligence, ability, & popularity; commandments are restrictions, etc.)

So... “being in the world, but not of the world” doesn’t mean “nonmembers” are to be avoided, it means you can live in situations in which you are bombarded with these false beliefs, but you don’t have to buy into them.
What’s fascinating is that Jews during Christ’s day were facing this same situation with the Greek culture & influence they lived in. How much of “the Greek” would they allow into their homes?
