Did you know? Japan banned heart-beating (ie donation after brain death (DBD)) transplants for 30 years? The 1st heart transplant surgeon, Juro Wada, was charged with murder (not convicted but led to a moratorium). And paediatric DBD transplants were only legalised 10 years ago.
Japan is also a world-leader in coronary stenting techniques as many are unwilling to undergo bypass surgery. The idea of cutting open the chest is inauspicious, meaning Japanese cardiologists are experts at treating disease we'd refer for CABG.
Adults and children in one of the most advanced countries in the world were denied life-saving transplants (of all organs) for 30 and 40 years respectively. To this day transplant rates are much lower per capita than S Korea or the US.
