the GRE is $102.50 with the fee waiver. $75 for the subject test. That's ~25 h at federal minimum wage. 14 h or less in many jurisdictions. It is not uncommon for labs to demand their "interns" spend 10 h a week for a semester to get that oh so valuable letter of recommendation.
Which may not come, if the intern doesn't make the big boss happy. And may have highly variable value, depending on who it is and who the target for the next opportunity is. Your BSD Prof in Psych may carry no weight in the Neuroscience program you are applying to.
In comparison, the sky high GRE scores are much more assured, obtained without constant reminder emails and transferable/translatable in value.
