75% of all suicides are men with 42-29yo most at risk. That mid-life crisis we joke about? That kills. We now lose 94 men a week to suicide, a rise from 84 though in 2018 the standard for a coroner to record suicide lowered from a criminal to civilian one #ForOurMen @toniwriter
The mid-life men sit in what some theorists call the "buffer generation" meaning they're generally raised by more emotionally stunted parents whilst bringing up & surrounded by a more emotionally progressive society so they feel stuck #ForOurMen @toniwriter
The biggest myth around #mensmentalhealth & suicide is that men don't need to be mentally ill to kill themselves. It's often the barriers within macho cultures such as being stoic/strong, shame in how they're feeling & life stressors such as divorce #ForOurMen @toniwriter
Though you may think that military has the highest suicide rate, it's actually construction; we lose approx 40 workers a month but we don't hear of it as much as military (which acts as a community) because many tradesmen work as subcontracting lone workers #ForOurMen @toniwriter
One of the reasons suicide is often so sudden for men is because it comes from impulsivity & a need to control the pain they're in; it's their way of 'fixing' their situations which is why many coroners posthumously diagnose mental illness at inquests #ForOurMen @toniwriter
