D1/P5 Fball/Bball are billion dollar corporations, so they are run as to not fumble the bag. Controversy is to be avoided, whether real or fake, big or small. Integrity of the product is paramount, so we try to avoid anything that casts doubt on that (1/8) https://twitter.com/ghd278/status/1278754331316170752
There’s a reason why I can be very outspoken on a lot of topics, but I don’t talk much about the ins and outs of this job: it’s forbidden per my contract. Conferences, teams, players, organizations, tv partners, etc are all off limits (2/8)
Most fans assume the fix is in, or at least they love to express that. So even innocent public observations can be blown up as: “SEE, I TOLD YOU [insert conspiracy theory]”. Hell, for some games they don’t want certain refs working cuz of the state they live in (3/8)
As a profession we still feel the effects of Tim Donoghy and match-fixing scandals in soccer, tennis and boxing. I get it though, cuz billions of dollars are gambled annually, and a split second decision by an official in a big game can swing the result by 9 figures (4/8)
Going back to the social justice demonstrations, there are a ton of players, coaches, administrators and fans who oppose what I stand for. Although I think I’m on the right side of history, why dump gasoline on that fire? What’s the purpose? (5/8)
I don’t begrudge anyone who wants to use their platform to speak on issues they are passionate about. But imo our job is to get in and out without being noticed. Anything we do that increases our visibility is probably something I oppose in general (6/8)
Big picture, the anthem probably shouldn’t be played in non-international competitions, but that’s a separate can of worms. For now, there’s surely middle ground solutions that don’t require refs to honor the anthem/flag while also not bringing attention to the matter (7/8)
I use refs specifically cuz of our roles as impartial arbiters and caretakers of the game. I have different opinions for players/coaches. The game is for them, so they should use the game and atmosphere as they see fit. Hope that helps! (8/8)
