This is why I'm also weirded out by cis black women who say sexism existed before racism. If white Supremacy gave us the gender binary + our current gender + sexuality oppression framework, along what genders did this sexism oppress? How was that oppression manifest? https://twitter.com/billburr/status/1278377814886985728
And that's not to say that sexism isn't real, just that my gender is deeply intertwined with my oppression as a Black person, and that all study I've seen says our understanding of gender is intertwined w/ white supremacist colonialism.
This take is transphobic as well because how can we know that "third gender" ppl existed and were spiritual leaders + regular leaders, but also say that women were oppressed more? Did who we would call trans or non binary ppl oppress cis women? How'd that work exactly?
Ultimately, it doesn't actually matter if sexism or racism came first. (it does but) the point is that we can build to a future where all genders are free and safe. This obsession with a reimagined past is trying to create legitimacy for something that doesn't exist.
How do we define gender outside of race? How much of how we define gender is grounded in racist white ideologies about the roles and purposes of genders? Why must gender have a purpose? Why can't we just exist, and do what we are individually best suited for?
The gag is, historically the notion of men hunt + women stay home is false. The person across genders best suited for hunting hunted + the one best suited for staying home stayed home. How does ur definition of gender take into acct disability in history anyway?
I just really want better for Black cis women, especially ones who call themselves activists + theorists but who keep falling into this specific trap. And then they misconstrue the Divine Feminine to legitimize their need to deify a gender that is rooted in white Supremacy? 🤢🤮
