Metal continuing to rule the 2020 airwaves. So many nods to the shoulders of the giants it sits upon. What an outlet from all the crazy.

THREAD 👇
#CurseTheSon - Excruciation

Strings tuned so low they’re hanging off the floor, contrasted by soaring harmonized vox - think Ozzy meets Layne Staley. A couple of detours with “Novembre” & ”Devil Doctor Blues”, otherwise an avalanche of DOOM. Filthy.

MUST HEAR: Phoenix Rising.
#HailSpiritNoir - Eden in Reverse

Laid back, expansive, never static, polished, drawing from 80s US synth, 70s UK prog rock, and dare I say it, Opeth reimagined.

MUST HEAR: Alien Lip Reading.
#Lux - In the Company of Serpents

Americana-infused Neurosis meets Leonard Cohen. Got that same ‘way out west’ vibe of Eagle Twin and Wayfarer.

MUST HEAR: That 3 song run of Daybreak > Chasm > Lightchild. A slow burner so worth a few spins before it clicks.
#Bonehawk - Iron Mountain

Kalamazoo Fuzz. Think CoC in a mid 80s groove filled misty haze. A touch of cowbell here, a splash of retro there.

MUST HEAR: Strange Magic <- get on this.
Lör - Edge of Eternity

Highlander Metal. THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE! Folky, speedy, melodic, proggy- it’s actually good use of an EP because 30 mins is all you need of this, unless you enjoy taking joyrides in tumble dryers. Music for the ADHD crowd for sure.

MUST HEAR: Ruin.
#Greyhawk - Keepers of the Flame

Summertime heavy metal wrapped in a 1983 production, played in a garage with imagined arena, spotlights and pyro. Think Holy Diver in a hot rod race with The Warning, with a pit stop in “RXRO”, like a Vinnie Moore tune on his Mind’s Eye album.
All the above are on Spotify and Bandcamp.

2020 continues to be relentless (in so many ways) - but the creativity in the metal scene is keeping its shit together.

And I’m absolutely loving how metal is going full circle. Just wait for the live performances in 2021. đŸ”„
