Today Parliament passed a Bill that means Home Affairs' officials can no longer refuse to solemnise same-sex marriages on the grounds of religion, conscience and belief. The only parties that voted against the Bill were the Freedom Front Plus and the EFF.
When my queer friends told me they were going to Home Affairs to get married, the first thing I did was tell them to make sure the Home Affairs they were going to had someone willing to marry them.
Not "congratulations" - "make sure that this day isn't ruined because someone hates us so much they would deprive you of a life together"
In 2016, only 117 out of 409 Home Affairs offices in SA had officials that were willing to solemnise same-sex marriages, making marriage inaccessible to most same-sex couples. That's what the Bill changed. That's what the EFF voted against.
