Limerick’s newest Green CommuterWay!

Reviving Irish Cements old railway line into a commuting and exercising route connecting Raheen/Dooradoyle and Mungret to the City centre completely off road

Does anyone have information on the old Irish Cement railway line, regarding ownership or future development plans? Almost 20 years since it’s last been used and it’s unlikely to ever be reopened because of the advances to road infrastructure in recent years

Similarly to old railway lines in West Limerick, Waterford and other places these old railway lines hold an immeasurable amount of potential. This track would give Limerick people the opportunity to walk/run/cycle in and out of the city in a car free zone

Assuming Irish Cement still own this land I feel it’s almost their corporate social responsibility to hand it over to the people at this stage. Cement production is an extremely carbon heavy process and extremely damaging to the locality. This gives them a chance to give back

Irish Cement could reduce the carbon footprint of Limerick by offering a greener and safer way for people to commute in and out of the city. It also gives them a great publicity opportunity to potentially open the “Irish Cement Greenway” if you will

Below you can see the existing route of the track and also access points to the route. This greenway would be a great addition to the city and there is also so much room for further development towards Mungret and Patrickswell connecting these areas directly to the city

In time this route could reach Adare and connect to the Great Southern Greenway providing a greenway from the city centre as far as Abbeyfeale, stretching the full length of the county and providing people with an alternative to the high cost of owning a car. Thoughts? 🤔
