Masks are a tad annoying. My glasses fog up. My iPhone doesn't recognize my face to unlock automatically. I have to remember to grab one when leaving the house. It muffles my voice a bit. BUT--I firmly believe these few inconveniences are worth slowing the spread of the virus. 1/
Some are saying there's no proof that mask-wearing does any good against the spread of covid-19. I beg to differ. Here's some recent evidence: https://bit.ly/38mVqF1 or here: https://bit.ly/2YXw0e5 or here: https://bit.ly/38n3Ufl 2/
Others are comparing mask-wearing with seat-belt-wearing or motorcycle-helmet-wearing. While these practices are similarly "invasive" on personal space, the difference is that seat belts & helmets protect YOU. Masks protect OTHERS. You may be infected/contagious & not know it. 3/
So if you're stubborn enough not to wear a seat belt or motorcycle helmet, even though the data say it is beneficial, then the only person that choice potentially harms is YOU. If you're too stubborn not to wear a mask, then that choice can potentially harm OTHERS. 4/
Others say covid-19 is no different than the flu, and many more people get the flu each year, so what's the big deal? Again, the facts tell us this is not so. Besides there being no vaccine or effective treatment yet for covid-19, it is much more than a respiratory ailment. 5/
Here are some recent articles I've read about how little doctors and scientists know about covid-19 (you may think the referenced source is biased, but remember they are quoting peer-reviewed studies and actual people in the field who are observing and reporting the info): 6/
covid can attack brains, lungs, hearts > https://wapo.st/3dNk7LO covid causes more strokes > https://bit.ly/3iqGWsj info showing difference between covid & flu > https://bit.ly/2VCW0ZO or > https://bit.ly/3in84Iw 7/
I am a person of faith. That can mean a lot of different things to a lot of people, but much of the push-back from wearing masks is coming from those who were raised in a similar evangelical, scripture-as-authority tradition as I was. And yet they seem to be ignoring some... 8/
...of the core tenets and cornerstones of their doctrine that would seem to underscore wearing masks: https://biblehub.com/matthew/7-12.htm or https://biblehub.com/mark/12-31.htm or https://biblehub.com/1_corinthians/10-24.htm or Phil. 2:1-5 https://biblehub.com/context/philippians/2-1.htm 9/
For those who want to explore deeper spiritual lessons/applications regarding mask-wearing, here are some more thoughts: https://bit.ly/38qAzAr or https://bit.ly/2VCe9H9 or https://bit.ly/3dXFdXQ 10/
I think about the sacrifices made by our nation during WWII, for the greater good of humanity. Would today's freedom-touting, instant-gratification, me-first society be able to ration sugar? https://bit.ly/3ghRbNF Gas? https://bit.ly/2VD0vna Or more? https://bit.ly/31Doerb 11/
I don't know how else to argue the point that mask-wearing to stem the spread of covid-19 is a best & proven practice, demonstrating love, compassion, solidarity, & resolve. It's too bad we have to enact regulations to REQUIRE people to do the right thing, but here we are. end/
