Re: housing issues in #Denver- housing advocates, houselessness advocates, service providers, affordable housing developers, construction workers, community members & some city council members are doing the work. The mayor is not. For profit developers are not. Big BIDs are not.
The No on 300 campaign worked for SO MANY REASONS: it had a big money to back it (big money that will not address housing issues because it’s not profitable for them,) and it further marginalized houseless people and played on housed people’s fears of homelessness.
So yes, I think one affordable housing development is not enough to address thousands of houseless Denverites. But it isn’t the fault of the people who actually work on housing issues. It’s the fault of the people, particularly leadership, who choose to do nothing.
And this doesn’t touch the deeper issues of redlining (which still functions today as a tool for development in #Denver,) or the total lack of accessible AFFORDABLE options for people with disabilities.
Until you have to look for housing that is accessible, you have NO IDEA what it is like. I know because I’ve helped friends with disabilities on their quest for accessible, affordable, close to transit housing in the community they want to live in. It is nearly impossible.
