During the Ebola outbreak, the shutdown of essential sexual & reproductive health services led to an increase in maternal and neonatal deaths - which could have been prevented.

Now, we're witnessing the same dynamic on a global scale, with even more lives hanging in the balance.
When governments and health providers are forced to make tough choices about the essential health services to maintain during the pandemic, women are often left out.

We’re seeing the harmful impacts of closures, cuts, and delays to access sexual and reproductive health services.
To control the spread of COVID-19, lockdowns & movement restrictions have been imposed. But staying home is not safe for women & girls who may be trapped with an abuser.

We’re seeing spikes in domestic violence reports & difficulties getting transportation to timely health care.
Global supply chain disruptions are also having an impact—and not only the shortages in personal protective equipment.

Shortages and delays affect critical sexual and reproductive health supplies, including essential maternal health medicines, contraceptives, and abortion pills.
Rumors & misinformation about COVID-19 can be deadly. Many women & girls avoid going to health centers out of fear, or don’t know when they need urgent medical care.

We're finding ways to adapt community outreach & health promotion to reach people with lifesaving information.
Adapting services to make them safer is crucial during the pandemic. But this is also the time for innovation.

This could be an opportunity to change aspects of how sexual & reproductive health services are delivered—including a move to more community-based & self-managed care.
