Black faculty are getting recruited, retained and promoted. There is money and incentives on the federal levels but the universities are not doing their J-O-B! We know that there isn’t a shortage!!! Dr. Berger-Sweeney adds that the number in the Black professoriate has ⬆️2%

Fitzroy “Pablo” Wickham calls out universities that are sending messages but we need to see the change in our institutions! One Black faculty member is not enough. We have to do what’s right, not the bare minimum.

We need to find ways to be equitable and treat mentoring as a skill that you need and should possess so that your trainees can be elevated! We implore everyone to be better mentors. Feel free to look at publications from @FORsymp #FoRmentorsnotTormentors #BlackinNeuro
There are and should be allies. Dr. Berger-Sweeney highlights that it isn’t just about mentorship, it is about advocacy and sponsorship! We need others to help elevate POC from URG. It is someone that will promote you and your career! #Blackinneuro #BlackintheIvory
@PhDeez is optimistic about creating space for new allies to come to the table. We need to let our colleagues or mentors know what needs to be changed. Now is the time to put $$ and actions into the work. At this point, it may be just setting up a zoom meeting!
@DrNiiAddy reminds us that we have to uncomfortable in order to make change. Colorblindness is violent and traumatize trainees and ECRs. We must be able to feel uncomfortable in order for their to be change. We need to have solidarity with them when we are in positions of power
Who cares how you get the $$. The merit is the same. So we can dispell the myth right now that you are “less than” if you have a diversity supplement or have a fellowship for URG. It revolves around #equity. It is not an handout. You didn’t you just get it b/c you exist - @PhDeez
Just a reminder that only 1-2% of Black scientist get @NIHFunding - Dr. Berger-Sweeney. If the system were fair, the numbers would not look like that given the # of Black scientists.

@DrNiiAddy says it isn’t just about recruitment. There are conferences specifically for URG where trainees can be recruited, but it isn’t just about recruitment... it is about creating change and using power to change policies so that Black faculty are retained and promoted
