/ I just want to point out that the same major US, UK and other companies coming out in solidarity and support of #BlackLivesMatter , are completely silent about a city of 7.5 million people ( #HongKong) currently being crushed by CCP suppression.
/ This should trouble any supporters of BLM in assessing the sincerity of companies as to why they might be making changes. Is it because they care, and suddenly see the light of equality or that it was going to hurt their bottom line if they didn't respond to pressure?
/ Why won't CitiBank, major financial institutions, Starbucks, Facebook, major luxury and fashion brands, or any of the other 1300 or so US companies with presence in HK show the same morality and "ability to change" by speaking out?
/ Because nobody is calling them out for this hypocrisy yet. Corporations have the luxury of responding to the cause that is inflicting damage on the brand in one country, while completely ignoring others which should hold an equal moral weight and obligation.
/ One of the only ways China will feel enough pressure over their actions would be if they saw the same resolute action by "concerned" companies like those 500 boycotting Facebook ads, or refusing to do business with China, or in Hong Kong without proof of maintained freedoms.
/ So where are you @Citi? What do you have to say @Starbucks? What are you going to do @jpmorgan? How about you @Facebook, with your large office and HK staff, focused on sales to Chinese market than has banned your product?
/ Or you @McDonalds or @kfc or @pizzahut with your local franchises in #HongKong? Or the major hotel chains like you @Marriott or @WHotels? You're ok with employees being under threat of arrest and extradition to China for saying, "Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of our time"?
/ Your silence is deafening and you weaken your carefully crafted messages of equality and inclusion by only instituting change on the issues you're called out on, while remaining silent on others because of the fear of losing business with China.
/ You shouldn't be allowed to have it both ways.
