My mother and I got into an argument about the statues being torn down and I couldn’t explain to her how wonderful it was. But then I asked her how she felt about Mt Rushmore bc her mother is Cherokee. I know there’s a difference Lakota Sioux and Cherokee.

Her reply was it’d be cool if the faces of Washington, Lincoln, Roosevelt and Jefferson were taken off and replaced with the tribe leaders of the Sioux. Or just have the land given back to them. And I was like...that’s why the statues are being taken down.

I saw her light bulb click over her head and she was like ooooooh. The fact that I am slowly reprogramming my mother is astounding. We see eye to eye on a lot of things, but bc of how she grew up and who she was married to has made it difficult.

She’s not racist, she just doesn’t understand why the statues are being taken down. She’s not homophobic, she and my dad made sure I grew up in a house where I could explore those options. Not that fucking voiced them bc I was terrified to speak around my father.
