While @JohnCranley wants to keep a mask requirement to indoors only, I'd like to mention my recent trip the @CincinnatiZoo. My wife and I went there last week for her birthday. It was our first real outing in months. We love the Zoo, and have been members for years. 1/
The Zoo requests people wear masks and stay socially distant. My wife and I wore masks, and did our best to keep away from people, But about 70% of the people in the Zoo weren't wearing masks. Some Zoo workers weren't wearing masks properly. Few people were socially distancing.
While the Zoo is keeping only open-air exhibits open to the public, there are still obstacles to keeping social distance. Some paths are narrow. And many groups of people were walking four or five abreast, with children just running around willy-nilly. 3/
At one point, my wife and I were looking at an exhibit, and a family of five — two adults and three kids — none of whom were wearing masks, just crammed up next to us. 4/
Something similar happened when we were looking at the red pandas. A family, this time with older kids, got very close, and kept moving around the viewing area as if we weren't there. Again, no one had masks. 5/
Only one family showed any kind of respect or regard to our safety. We were leaving Hippo Cove, and two parents and their child in a stroller were in our way. The path was narrow, but the people were gracious, moved out of the way, and kept their distance. We thanked them.
We take walks almost around our neighborhood every day. I'm sure many people do as well. We and our neighbors essentially play Frogger, dodging each other — and cars — to stay socially distant. I'm sure that happens everywhere in #Cincinnati. 7/
Just because we're outside doesn't mean there's ample room to socially distance. Requiring masks in public can help keep people safe. 8/8
Postscript: I didn't write this to shame the @CincinnatiZoo. I do love the Zoo. I kept this to myself for a week. I hope everyone can enjoy outdoor activities safely, including going to the Zoo. But that should mean people must wear masks. It's for my safety. It's for your safety
