Thread of things I am hearing/ thinking about that I would like to share:

We should ask ourselves why are we asking Black or Indigenous individuals to serve in one way or another. Do we actually value their input?

Dr. Berger-Sweeney says that all high up positions should be diverse positions. E.g., Every VP of academic affairs should be involved in diversity issues, not just VPs of diversity. We need both. Need mainline, mainstream positions to consider diversity.

Diversity should not be an “add-on” perspective, it should be fundamental.

When providing diversity opportunities (i.e., diversity conferences) are we also providing access to them? (Financial access, time access, etc.).

Dr. Berger-Sweeney cites that over 60 years, the percentage of professors who are Black who got tenure increased by only 2%.

. @PhDeez (who promised earrings and did not disappoint) mentions that all faculty including white faculty should be providing mentorship in an equitable way to diverse students.

. @DrNiiAddy talks about how there needs to be accountability. We need non-URM allies to step up and provide appropriate mentoring to students.

Dr. Berger-Sweeney adds that advocacy from allies is as important as mentorship.

Dr. Berger-Sweeney continues to say that non-URM allies should be advocating in ways like suggestion promotions, writing reference letters, and nominations for awards. Allies should be helping their mentees with their career trajectories.
