I spent a day on @Unacademy as a student for IITJEE.

Here's what actually happens there -

1. Tutors

- Most tutors have been creating videos from a year or so on youtube already

- Unacademy is way to monetize the youtube audience.

1/n
- They take live-interactive classes on UA + and recorded lectures go on both YT & UA

- UA educator app has brought down the time for video creation from 3hrs to 3mins setup (source @gauravmunjal blog)

- Exact assignment and homework given on Telegram/ WhatsApp groups

2/n
- The educator app says NO sharing of no.s and off-platform interactions. But then, it's India.

- Every educator has these whatsapp Group which you can enter if you subscribe to UA plus with "their code'"

I think that's an Income sharing model.

3/n
- Tutors know most students by their name (amazed me) offline vs online adv gone 😕

- I expected live chat to be spammed with irrelevant BS, but surprisingly UA does a brilliant job of promoting genuine questions.

- tutors take up suggestions/ questions in lecture

4/n
- Tutors cross sell, On UA they ask you to subscribe to YT. On YT they ask you to buy an UA + subscription

- Win win, UA gives better tools to create, Income share. YT monetization with ads. (1 guy had 50.2 k subs, other 2M)

- High qual rig - Green screen, smartboard

5/n
TL;DR
Unacademy is a Substack for tutors. Monetize your content, create some free posts, but it depends if you have an audience, which comes from YT

1. Build audience on YT
2. Monetize on UA+
3. Community - Wapp/Telegram

Notes questions on drive, wapp (someone disrupt this😛)
