So it's 2nd July and I was patiently waiting for this webinar by #Elsevier.
I was interested in it after receiving a number of rejections for my manuscript which l and my co-authors had worked so hard on and thought was really relevant.

The panelists were wonderful and knowledgeable. Stephane Berghmans did a great job moderating the webinar
. Once again, I identified with Veronique De Herde, PhD candidate and @openscience ambassador for @Eurodoc

Questions on "how academic's career and contributions are assessed and valued" were discussed and here are some key take aways
. I and 3829 other participants are sure you will find these lessons helpful.

High cost of research output threaten researchers and society. It is extremely damaging to be in a system where value is not acknowledged. Or where quantity is valued over quality; and numbers over depth of investigation.
Sadly, this is the current research reward system
Sadly, this is the current research reward system

For early career researchers, there's a cognitive dissonance between the ambition to do quality research and the environment we find ourselves. I couldn't agree more
.

As reiterated by Véronique @vdeherde82, as an early career, you see a unique journal, it's open access, quality-oriented, peer-reviews, fits your research context, relevant
. You want to submit your manuscript. Then hey! You reconsider: Is this a good move for my career???

There is a need for an open and fairer reward system. The current reward system is tied to the 'publish-or-perish' mentality. The consequences are: Academic fraud, Bullying, Intimidation, Harassment...(feel free to add)
At the Universities, emphasis is currently placed on output rather than people (i.e researcher's development). The system doesn't incentivize researchers to take risks by collaborating. It rewards numbers (impact factor) & privilege rather than excellence. I find this to be true!
So what should be rewarded??? 3 things stood out for me
:
*Collaborative research attitude
*Impactful policy recommendation
*Excellence rather than numbers (Impact Factor)

Making research accessible is the first step to impacting society.

The research community should not let other stakeholders decide for them what matters. Besides, concentrating on impact factor gives early-career researchers no chance to explore new ideas. Changing the publishing model will go a long way
The idea of doing things differently, changing the reward system narrative could spread like a virus. One institution in one country could take the lead and this would spread!
More debates and awareness as to why #OpenScience and #openresearch should be raised/adopted.

To early-career researchers, a panelist had this to say:
*Be engaged with research quality
*Actively pursue open science and make it a priority
*Understand yourself and the environment
*Also prepare for disappointment and failure (this is not to scare you)

The point?
There is need for a change in the research reward system. It should be open and fairer. I'm hopeful that Elsevier and other research institutions will keep championing this. It's simply not enough to organize webinars!
