A major key to stopping or starting a habit is FRICTION

I never see anyone else talk about it

So, what is friction?

🔽
Friction is how hard it is for you to actually carry out the habit

Going to the kitchen to grab a snack or a beer?

It's easy, so low friction

Getting in your car and driving to a gym across town?

That's harder, so high friction

🔽
Suddenly stopping or starting a habit won't work

It'll be uncomfortable - your brain will fight you, and you'll lose

The trick is to manage the friction associated with the habit

You have to convince your brain the bad habit isn't worth it, or the good habit is

🔽
In the case of a bad habit, you want to increase the friction

You can do this with minor things

∙ never keep any beer cold
∙ bury your snacks in the back of the cabinet
∙ put your phone across the room so you can't snooze the alarm

🔽
To start up a good habit, you want to lower friction

∙ pre-cook healthy meals
∙ pick a gym closer to home or work
∙ keep your running clothes by the bed

🔽
Your brain is lazy

That's why habits exist - to save energy

If you make a habit too difficult to continue, your brain won't want to keep pursuing it!
