Today I'm in committee debating the individual clauses of Ford's eviction bill - Bill #184. You can watch the livestream here. It's technical and hard to follow (I know) but I'll try my best to tweet commentary in the thread below. https://www.ola.org/en/legislative-business/video
PC's deny unanimous consent to table an amendment to close Doug Ford's post-2018 rent control loophole. (Apartments built after November 2018 have no rent control)
We are trying to increase compensation to tenants for no-fault evictions (for renovictions, purchaser's use, or conversion to commercial unit) from 1 month rent compensation to 3 months rent compensation)

PC's: Oppose
Libs: Abstain

The three related amendments fail.
Moved an amendment to require the Landlord and Tenant Board to maintain a registry of no-fault eviction applications to identify repeat offenders of illegal evictions.

PCs: Oppose

Amendment fails.
PC's table a motion to retroactively apply a section of the bill to the beginning of the pandemic. This section requires tenants to give advanced written notice at the LTB to raise new issues at eviction hearings.

NDP: Opposes

Amendment carries
PCs block unanimous consent to table a motion to ban all evictions by law during COVID-19 and the post-pandemic recovery period.

SHAME.
I just tabled a motion to scrap vacancy decontrol within #Bill184. This is the root cause of renovictions in Ontario. Rent control between tenancies removes the perverse financial incentive to force out long-term tenants & jack up rent to the next tenant.
PCs Oppose
Motion fails
I tabled a motion to increase fines for corporate landlords who violate the RTA from $250,000 to $1,000,000.

We need real penalties to stop bad-faith, illegal evictions.

Libs & PCs both voted against.

Motion fails.
