One of the things that always weirds me out the most about this kind of statement is that it reads like it’s coming from someone who fell through a time hole from the 1960s.

Kid. It’s 2020. “Queer” done been reclaimed for decades.
I’m sure it still gets used as a slur in places, I’m not saying it doesn’t, but it’s still pretty much reclaimed? It’s a fucking academic field. It’s boring. It’s mainstream. We won.
Now “gay”, on the other hand.
It’s almost as if the recent backlash against “queer” as an inclusive term while “gay” gets left alone might not be 100% on the level 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
For those who actually don’t know what I’m referring to here: there is a not-insignificant problem with younger queer people who are both ignorant and very anxious about social justice buying into TERF propaganda about “queer” being a slur.
TERFs are threatened by “queer” because it’s inclusive and intrinsically challenging of the gender binary so they’re trying to indoctrinate people into not using it.
This is exacerbated by a weird tendency among zoomers—especially in fandom circles—to assume that older queers have nothing to say to them and that the history of their community is not worth knowing.
Or they believe the history is worth knowing but they’re listening to TERFy distortions of that history often because they don’t know better.
There is a hard distinction to be made between being uncomfortable with personally owning a term and insisting that everyone coddle your discomfort and fall into line with their own identity being a fucking slur.
OP was literally demanding that everyone anticipate every variation on the term *with fucking asterisks* because they refused to take responsibility for their own filters and everyone is their parent.

(Please do not dogpile OP)
This is a far more common attitude than it should be.
It must be exhausting for Gen X and older queer/LGBTQA people to feel like they finally got to a place where queer spaces could be carved out and protecting and now they have teenagers accusing them of being insensitive for not recognizing that their own identity is a slur.
There is a *big* overlap between this attitude and young fans who go intentionally looking for clearly-tagged Problematic Content and then launch harassment campaigns against the people who posted and clearly tagged it because “I don’t need to see that”.
And it is not an accident that the kids buying into TERF propaganda disproportionately harass trans creators, especially trans PoC
TL;DR: TERFs ruin fucking everything
Also Boomer is a state of mind and behavior. These kids are fucking pearl-clutching Boomers.
Time hole from the 1960s, y’all
Honestly, I think there are in fact points at which “that triggers me” becomes a You Problem.
If LITERALLY THE NAME OF A QUEER-BUILT FIELD OF SOCIAL THEORY triggers you, then the entire community is not a safe space for you, and given that it isn’t going to remake itself in order to be safe for you, maybe you need to withdraw for your own safety until you do some healing.
Or recognize that your own safety is your responsibility, not everyone else’s.
We worked hard to create our own spaces. We worked hard to claim them, to make them ours. We fought and bled and died for them. If those spaces trigger you, that is frankly not our problem.
