TIL (02/07/20) - On 28th Feb 1970, Copenhagen witnessed a concert performed by a rock band named the Nobs. The band was on a tour of Europe, starting with Helsinki and culminating in Dusseldorf; in all the other cities, the band performed under its real name - Led Zeppelin. (1/5)
Eva Von Zeppelin, a descendant of Count Ferdinand, creator of the Zeppelin aircraft, felt outraged by Led Zeppelin's use of her family name. In 1969, she had tried unsuccessfully to stop a TV appearance of the band in Copenhagen, describing the group as 'shrieking monkeys'. (2/5)
The band members met her, attempting to calm her down. Apparently, it worked as well. But later, she saw the cover of the group's 1st album, with the image of the exploding Hindenburg. And 'she just exploded', according to the band's guitarist Jimmy Page. (3/5)
It was a sensitive issue; it was the Hindenburg explosion that had initiated the demise of the Zeppelin aircraft. So Eva Zeppelin intensified her campaign and threatened the band with a lawsuit, unless they changed their name. (4/5)
The band wanted to avoid legal troubles & came up with the idea of playing under 'The Nobs', a pun on their European promoter, Claude Nobs. The controversy helped the (then) new band gain more publicity across the world, something that wouldn't have pleased Eva Zeppelin! (5/5)
