Have you ever wanted to get into lecturing at university but never known quite how to? Here's a thread of tips I have picked up over the past decade, whilst I've worked at 5 different unis, in the latter years hiring dozens of full and part-time staff 👇 #lecturing #freelancers
1. Most casual lecturing posts are not advertised - so it can be a case of knowing or contacting the right person.

Want to find out more? Then @Emmajourno and I will give you the inside track on university work in our masterclass on Tuesday evening: https://www.tickettailor.com/events/freelancingforjournalists/382945
2. Even in these uncertain times universities still need people from industry with specialist, up-to-date skills to provide training and education to students
3. Many casual contracts do come with benefits attached - but it's important to know what they are and who to ask for more information
4. Hourly rates are not just for contact time - and they are not arbitrary. They are often developed from complex work planning formula, but again it is important to understand what the rate includes
5. Part-time lecturing work comes in many guises with many different types of contracts, job titles and payment system - there is no one size fits all
6. Starting lecturing, is not like starting a job. There will probably be no induction and you will be thrown in at the deep end - without a float.

If you're not sure what to expect, then listen to our experiences before you take the leap: https://www.tickettailor.com/events/freelancingforjournalists/382945
7. Your years of experience in industry is surprisingly not the first thing that needs to be at the top of your CV. But don't worry, we can tell you what your CV priorities need to be!
8. Getting your foot in the door, even for just one hour, is worth the hours of preparation it takes, if you want to gain regular lecturing work
9. The HR department is your friend. Make the most of this excellent resource. You will find it has endless policies and documents that help you navigate university processes and what you are entitled to, even as casual staff.
10. Like freelance journalism, lecturing is about building networks and slowly building up a portfolio of regular work. You also need to be able to turn your hand to anything, be reliable and be able to hit deadlines. https://www.tickettailor.com/events/freelancingforjournalists/382945
