To get real for a second, one problem with living in a gerontocracy is that too few of the nation’s top leaders seem to feel a visceral concern about how failing to open schools will affect younger folks’ lives — children and adults alike. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/29/opinion/coronavirus-school-reopening.html
How any observer can see that: by noticing how the focus on ‘reopening’ the economy keeps turning to bars and gyms — places where viral spread is most likely to happen.

Parents & guardians with kids in schools are very much part of the economy, yet … 🤷🏾‍♂️ https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/01/opinion/coronavirus-schools.html
Without concerted efforts to help schools open — by curbing outbreaks and promoting wide adoption of safety measures such as mask-wearing — systems are instead attempting to fumble ahead on their own.

Alas, that isn’t necessarily going well. https://twitter.com/sfchronicle/status/1278543840367050757
What the above story spotlights: sure, the impacts of covid-19 seem lesser, across the population of young people, than they do for adults. But adults have to work in schools too!

Are we doing enough to reduce transmission among adults outside of schools? Signs point to “no.” https://twitter.com/covid19tracking/status/1278472369045032960
Are governments acquiring the space needed in dormant offices, vacant big-box stores, and empty malls, to conduct education while enabling social distancing? Not that I’ve heard about — and it can’t help that federal lawmakers won’t hand cash to broke states and cities. https://twitter.com/cfr_org/status/1275024469682257922
TL;dr: schools seem unready to fully or safely reopen, even though failing to fully open them will send negative effects rippling forward through children’s whole lives.

And the level of national energy directed at solving this problem seems close to nil.
