This is the most wrong footed vitriol I've ever had the misfortune to read. A quote from the article reads "As a result, (of the Dravidian movement) many Brahmins decided to move to the U.S because of ethnocide of their culture". (1/n) https://twitter.com/sahforums/status/1278340847952683009
I'm aware that the Indian diaspora is generally GROSSLY misinformed about what is going on in the country but to take that misinformation and write a whole entire article defending Tam Brams is a new level I think. The article begins by claiming that Brahmins are a minority (2/n)
And especially TamBrams even more so. What the author refuses to take into account is that although Brahmins are statistically low in number in India they are not a MINORITY. They hold all the power in the country and have gotten this position by oppressing actual minority (3/n)
The author claims that Tamils were persecuted during the Dravidian movement in the 1930s and as a result of this persecution were "forced" To move to the great land of USA. TamBrams were not "persecuted" They were called out on their centuries of oppression (4/n)
She then goes on to talk about how "actually there is no misogyny in comm because women are highly educated" And while that may be true the presence of education does not immediately cancel out the presence of misogyny. The two are not mutually exclusive. (5/n)
Moreover she equates the high levels of education with TamBrams focus on "self made success". The current generation of TamBrams is not self made, we rely on " Merit" gathered by our ancestors who got educations and opportunities at the cost of their lower caste neighbors(6/n)
Again, I understand that this article is merely a review for # tv show's accuracy but I find it extremely wrong footed and in very poor taste to attempt to write a review regarding caste without being aware of some of the basics of the caste system and how it operates (7/n)
I mean the show itself is ridiculous, Casteist and Islamophobic and rather than addressing those concerns the author chooses to perpetuate the systems by saying "ha par hamare yahaan toh aisa hi hota hai" (8/n)
I did LOL when she talked about reincarnation (Devi in the show believes her father's spirit lives on in a wolf) because lost Brahmins would be horrified at being reincarnated as an animal, that too a carnivore, the author talked about how beautiful it was lmao (9/n)
Next she claimed that there are many Temples in India where the priests are non Brahmins, so in fact India is a wonderful place where anyone can learn teh shlokas if they want to, yay! While there may be places where non Brahmins serve as priests, usually these priests are (10/n)
Sanctified by Brahmins and are Caste wise related to Brahmins. Eg: CKPs in Maharashtra are Kshatriyas who can study and recite the vedas as "allowed" By Brahmins. Note, Kshatriyas too are a dominant caste and can only take part in rituals post being sanctified by Brahmins (11/n)
It's also interesting that the author talks about "madi" And the culture of being clean vs unclean without thinking about the reasoning behind these steps and why it is that Brahmins are so specific about this. Cleanliness is directly related to caste purity (12/n)
The author discussed Vegetarianism and how millennials are leading this movement. She failed to think about why Brahmins practice vegetarianism, and specifically don't eat Beef. Again, related to caste and Purity. Isn't it so easy to dismiss our bigotry as culture haha :)) (13/n)
Perhaps worst of all she defends the shows support of Modi. I'm not going to get into why one shouldn't support a Casteist, Islamophobic bigot but it was shocking to see her show facts and figures displaying how millennials are showing widespread love and support for Modi (14/n)
And then using that to justify the show displaying its main characters supporting him. She says "What about the 50,000 people who came to see Modi during the Howdy Modi event in Texas". Honey, just because they're idiots in a horde does not make them correct. (15/n)
She then says there is a stigma relates to marrying Muslims because "inter religious marriages have higher divorce rates" And doesn't bother delving into the reasons behind that. Could it be because honor killings are still rampant in India? Or perhaps because families (16/n)
Have been known to cut off contact with children who engage in inter caste, class or faith based marriages. In a family based community like India marriages simply do not survive with so much outside hate and interference (17/n)
Finally the author discusses the stigma against therapy held by South Asians and then DEFENDS it. She claims that yoga, waking up early, and mediating will cure one of all evils so really us South Asians do not need therapy :)) Bitch everyone could benefit from therapy (18/n)
In conclusion this Coconut article was ghostwritten by Modi, good night, please take the time to read up on things before writing about them and remember that Black Lives, Dalit Lives, Adivasi Lives and Kashmiri Lives Matter, goodnight (19/19)
Yeah, I said good night twice, perhaps this way I will actually have a good night who knows
